    Why We Didn't Put PCM Gel In Our Comforter

    PCM is winning listicles right now. We looked at it seriously, ran the numbers, read the research — and chose something else. Here's exactly why.

    If you've been shopping for a comforter recently, you've probably seen it everywhere.

    PCM-infused. Phase-change cooling. Advanced thermal regulation technology.

    It's the ingredient winning listicles right now. Type "best cooling comforter" into any search engine and PCM will be in the top results, the top recommendations, and usually the top price tier. Brands that never cared about temperature are suddenly adding it to their marketing copy.

    We looked at it seriously. We ran the numbers. We read the research.

    And then we chose something else.

    Here's exactly why — and what we chose instead.

    First, Let's Give PCM a Fair Hearing

    Phase change material is genuinely clever technology. It's not a gimmick.

    The science: certain materials absorb and store large amounts of thermal energy as they shift between physical states — typically solid to liquid and back again. In bedding, PCM is usually delivered as microencapsulated beads — tiny, polymer-shelled capsules containing a wax-based compound, often paraffin — woven into the fabric or embedded in the fill. As your body heats up during the night, the PCM absorbs that heat and melts. As you cool down, it releases the heat back and solidifies.

    In theory, this creates a stabilizing buffer. Your body temperature fluctuates less. You stay closer to your ideal sleep temperature for longer. That's a genuinely real solution to a genuinely real problem — overheating during sleep is one of the most common causes of waking in the night.

    So why didn't we use it?

    The Problem With PCM in a Comforter Specifically

    Here's what most of the marketing around PCM doesn't tell you.

    The limitation nobody is talking about

    PCM has a capacity limit. And it doesn't reset on its own.

    Once the PCM has absorbed all the heat it can hold — once it's fully shifted from solid to liquid — it stops working. It becomes thermally inert until it has a chance to dissipate the stored heat back into the ambient environment and return to its solid state.

    In a mattress or mattress protector, this has some room to function. The material is in contact with circulating air on multiple sides; there's more opportunity for the thermal cycle to complete. In a comforter, the situation is different. You're sandwiched between a mattress below and a comforter above. Heat dissipation is slower. The PCM can reach saturation point — fully liquid, fully charged — and then it's simply not doing anything useful.

    Research on microencapsulated PCMs in textile applications is honest about this: the materials deliver a genuine cooling or buffering effect, but only for as long as the phase change is actively occurring. The word temporary does significant work in descriptions of what these materials provide.

    For some sleepers, that window is enough. But for people who sleep hot — and that's a significant portion of the people who find their way to us — the saturation problem matters. The people who wake at 2am overheating, who have tried everything: PCM doesn't reliably solve it. It delays it.

    The Second Problem: What's Actually In It

    PCM in bedding is most commonly paraffin-based. Paraffin is a petroleum derivative — the same material family as candle wax and certain plastics. It's encapsulated in a synthetic polymer shell, typically melamine-formaldehyde resin or similar compounds.

    That's the material pressed against your skin, every night, for years.

    We make bedding for people who care about what touches their body. Our core customer has already started reading labels on skincare, on food, on cleaning products. They didn't switch to bamboo sheets because it sounded nice — they switched because something in their environment was affecting their skin, and they were trying to find it.

    We're not going to put petroleum-derivative microcapsules in our comforter and call it a health-forward product.

    There's also a longevity question. Research on paraffin PCMs under repeated thermal cycling documents that the microcapsule shells can rupture under compression over time, and that the PCM compound itself can degrade chemically, losing its latent heat storage capacity. You spend $250–$400 on a cooling comforter, and after a few years, the thing it was supposed to do, it no longer does particularly well.

    What We Chose Instead, and Why

    Our comforter — The Settle — uses 100% maize fill inside a 100% viscose bamboo shell.

    Maize fill is derived from corn starch through a fermentation and polymerization process that produces a plant-based fiber. Here's what that means in practice:

    • Naturally hollow fiber structure Hollow fibers trap still air — the same principle that makes down effective at insulation — but because the fiber is breathable rather than plastic, that air can exchange with the surrounding environment. Temperature regulation that's passive and continuous, not temporary and finite. The fill doesn't saturate. It doesn't stop working at 2am.
    • Naturally moisture-wicking surface Maize fiber has a water-repellent surface structure. Moisture — the sweat your body releases during sleep — is drawn away from the fiber rather than absorbed into it. The sensation of sleeping hot is often as much about humidity as temperature. Maize fill addresses the moisture side of that equation, not just the thermal side.
    • Plant-derived and biodegradable No petroleum. No synthetic polymer shells. No compound that needs to be microencapsulated to keep it from breaking down. It starts as a plant. It can return to one.
    • Coherent with the bamboo shell Our 100% viscose bamboo outer shell is already doing meaningful thermal work — bamboo viscose is a naturally breathable, moisture-wicking fiber. Pairing it with a synthetic PCM fill would have been incoherent: a natural, breathable shell over a petroleum-based interior. Maize fill creates a comforter where the shell and the fill work from the same logic. Both breathe. Both wick. Neither traps.

    The Baffle Box Construction: One More Thing Worth Knowing

    The fill is one decision. The construction is another.

    The Settle uses baffle box construction — individual fabric chambers stitched throughout the comforter that keep the maize fill evenly distributed across the whole surface. No cold spots where the fill has shifted to one corner. No hot spots where it's clustered too thick. The warmth — and the breathability — is consistent from edge to edge, all night.

    This matters more than people realize. Many comforters with good fill materials underperform because the fill migrates. You're sleeping under four inches of fill on one side and half an inch on the other. The baffle box construction is what ensures the material is actually where it needs to be.

    So Who Is This For — And Who Should Look Elsewhere

    We'd rather be honest with you than sell you something that doesn't fit.

    • People who care about what's next to their skin and want plant-based, not petroleum-based, materials
    • People who want the settled weight of a heavier comforter without the heat trap that usually comes with it

    PCM might suit you if
    • You sleep in a very cool, well-ventilated room and run only slightly warm — the thermal buffer window may be enough
    • The cool-to-touch sensation at first contact matters to you — PCM delivers an initial coolness that some sleepers genuinely love as they're falling asleep
    • You don't have particular concerns about synthetic materials next to your skin

    We're not here to tell you PCM is a fraud. It's a real technology with real applications. We're here to tell you why it wasn't the right choice for what we were trying to make — and why, for most of the people who find their way to us, it probably isn't the right choice for what they're trying to solve either.


    The Longer Answer to a Short Question

    Someone on our team was asked once, in a product meeting, why we weren't following the PCM trend. The answer was something like: because a trend isn't an argument.

    The question we kept coming back to when building The Settle was a different one: what does a hot sleeper actually need across a full eight-hour night?

    Not in the first fifteen minutes. Not during the fall-asleep window. Across the whole night, including the 2am wake-up, including the lighter sleep in the early morning hours when your body temperature is naturally lower and you need the comforter to shift with you in both directions.

    The answer, for us, was breathability that doesn't saturate. Moisture management that doesn't rely on chemical coatings. Materials that work with your body's own temperature regulation rather than trying to override it with a finite charge of stored thermal energy.

    Maize fill, inside a bamboo viscose shell, built in baffle boxes, is our answer to that question.

    PCM is someone else's answer to a slightly different question.
