90% of People With Eczema Lose Sleep to It. Here's How to Get Both Back.

90% of People With Eczema Lose Sleep to It. Here's How to Get Both Back. - SoftLanding

If you or someone you love has eczema, you already know the cruelest part: it gets worse right when you're trying to rest. You lie down, the house goes quiet, and the itch arrives like clockwork. You're not imagining it — and you're not doing anything wrong.

This is the guide I wish someone had handed me years ago. It covers what's actually happening to eczema-prone skin overnight, the practical changes that made a real difference for us, and why the surface your skin touches for eight hours a night matters more than most people realize.

A quick, honest note before we start: eczema is a medical condition, and nothing here replaces advice from your dermatologist or doctor. Think of this as a set of supportive changes that work alongside your treatment plan  not instead of it.

    Why eczema flares at night

There's a real, physiological reason nighttime is the hardest. Several things happen while you sleep:

Your body temperature naturally shifts as you fall asleep, and warmth or sweating makes skin feel itchier. The moisturizer you applied hours ago has worn thin. And without the distractions of the day, your nervous system simply notices the itch more. Research suggests up to 90% of adults with atopic dermatitis experience sleep disturbances — so if eczema is stealing your sleep, you're far from alone. (Eczema Society of Canada)

The bigger problem is the itch-scratch cycle. Scratching offers a second of relief but damages the skin barrier, which increases inflammation and drives more itching. Break the cycle at night, and you protect your skin — and your sleep — during the hours it's most vulnerable.

That's why what you do in the bedroom matters so much.

The small changes that made a real difference

When we first started managing eczema in our family, I became obsessive about removing hidden triggers — and honestly, a lot of it helped. Here's where I'd start, roughly in order of effort:

Cut out the clothing tags. This sounds minor. It isn't. I cut the tags out of literally hundreds of garments. Those stiff little labels and the seams around them create constant friction against sensitive skin — and friction is one of the mechanical triggers of an eczema flare. (American Journal of Clinical Dermatology)

Rethink your detergent. Switch to a 100% fragrance-free detergent, skip fabric softener and dryer sheets entirely (they leave irritating residue), and run an extra rinse cycle so no detergent lingers in the fibers. Dermatologists consistently flag detergent residue as an overlooked irritant. (Medical News Today)

Simplify everything that touches skin. I stripped our routine down to gentle, fragrance-free soaps and bath products, and started buying only 100% organic clothing with no seams or embroidery that could rub or scratch. Fewer ingredients, fewer surprises.

Keep the bedroom cool. Since heat and sweating are direct flare triggers, a cooler room and breathable layers help your skin stay calm through the night.

Moisturize right before bed. A thick, fragrance-free moisturizer applied just before sleep replaces the barrier that's worn off during the day.

Wash bedding hot, regularly. Washing sheets at 140°F or higher helps kill dust mites, a common allergen that collects in bedding and can worsen symptoms.

Each of these helped. But there was one change that punched above all the others — and it's the one most people overlook.

The piece most people miss: what your skin lies on all night

You can do everything right — perfect detergent, perfect moisturizer, seamless organic pajamas — and then spend eight hours pressed against a sheet that's quietly working against you.

Most conventional bedding is made from materials that trap heat, hold moisture, and drag against the skin. For eczema-prone skin, that combination is a recipe for a 3 a.m. flare. Synthetic fabrics like polyester are among the worst offenders, because they cause overheating and sweating that trigger the exact itch you're trying to avoid. (Medical News Today)

This is where the material genuinely matters — and where bamboo stands apart.

Why bamboo is so well-suited to sensitive, eczema-prone skin

Bamboo isn't a gimmick here. The UK National Eczema Society now lists bamboo and Tencel lyocell among the soft, breathable materials often better tolerated by people managing eczema. (Fibers & Polymers review, 2022) Here's specifically why the fabric properties line up with what eczema-prone skin needs:

It's remarkably low-friction. Bamboo viscose fibers have a smooth, round structure that creates far less micro-abrasion against skin than rougher fabrics. A 2022 study in Fibers and Polymers found that bamboo viscose's naturally low surface friction significantly reduces mechanical irritation — the kind that helps kick off the itch-scratch cycle. Less friction means less provocation.

It wicks moisture fast. Sweat and trapped humidity irritate eczema — dried sweat even leaves a salty residue that triggers itching. Bamboo viscose pulls moisture away from the skin much faster than cotton, keeping the surface dry and calm through the night.

It regulates temperature. Because overheating is a direct flare trigger, staying cool matters. Bamboo runs noticeably cooler than cotton in warm conditions while still insulating when it's cold — helping your skin hold a steady, comfortable temperature instead of swinging hot and sweaty.

It's genuinely breathable. Airflow through the fabric prevents the heat-and-moisture buildup that conventional bedding traps against your skin.

Put simply: bamboo addresses the exact four things — friction, moisture, heat, and breathability — that make nighttime the hardest part of living with eczema.

The part you can't see: what's not in the fabric

Fabric properties are only half the story. What matters just as much is what your skin isn't being exposed to. Many textiles carry residual manufacturing chemicals, allergenic dyes, and formaldehyde-based finishes (the same ones found in "wrinkle-free" and "stain-resistant" fabrics) — all of which can irritate reactive skin. (Medical News Today)

This is why all of our bamboo is OEKO-TEX certified — independently tested and verified to be free from harmful substances. For eczema-prone skin, that verification isn't a nice-to-have; it's the difference between a fabric that soothes and one that quietly sabotages every other change you've made.

How we designed our bedding around this

I'll be honest about what bedding can and can't do: it won't cure eczema, and no fabric should replace your treatment plan. What it can do is remove the nighttime triggers that make managing eczema so much harder — and that's exactly what we set out to build.

Every choice was made with reactive skin in mind: 100% bamboo viscose for that smooth, low-friction surface; a weave engineered for breathability and moisture-wicking so skin stays cool and dry; and OEKO-TEX certification so there are no hidden chemical irritants against your skin for a third of your life. It's the bedding I wanted to exist when I was cutting tags out of clothing at midnight — designed to work with your skin, not against it.

If you've tried the detergents, the moisturizers, and the seamless clothing and still wake up itching, the surface you sleep on is the piece worth looking at next.
